Faculty - Jane Morse
Jane Crowell Morse, 1922-2011
Jane Morse, wife of the poet and scholar Samuel French Morse, was a 1945 graduate of Mount Holyoke College; she received her MA from the University of Maine in 1947. A native of Bangor, she returned to Maine in 1985 after a career of teaching composition and literature at Boston University. At the University of Maine she embarked upon a second career of teaching composition and tutoring international students in our Writing Center. She retired in 2009 at the age of 87.Lecturing and reviewing children’s books were special avocations. Jane edited “Beatrix Potter’s Americans: Selected Letters,” and was the American liaison officer for the Beatrix Potter Society. The natural world was always of great interest to Jane. She was active in the Eastern Maine Chapter of Maine Audubon Society and spent numerous hours at Fields Pond Audubon Center with her close friend, Judy Markowsky.
Jane’s gift of valuable literary papers related to her husband’s work on Wallace Stevens established the Jane Crowell Morse and Samuel French Morse Fund, to be used for the benefit of the English Department and the National Poetry Foundation. We are very grateful for her generosity and for all of her contributions to the department over more than 25 years.
