Introduction: 20 Year career in the U.S. Army Infantry, including tours of duty in Korea, Viet Nam (2 one-year tours), Germany.  Moved to Maine upon retirement and began working at UMaine in the fall of 1983 where I held a variety of jobs, primarily as a teacher in the English Department.  Married to Surah Toabe Whelan with three children ages 25-39, none of whom, thank God, live at home.

Education: AB, Bowdoin College, 1962; MA UMass, Amherst, 1971

Professional Experience: 1962-1982 U.S. Army Infantry Officer
1983-1985  Instructor in English, UMaine
1985-1987  Assistant to the President, UMaine
1987-1988, Director, Retention Program, UMaine
1988-1997, Executive Assistant to the VP for Academic Affairs and Executive Assistant to the President, UMaine
1997-Present, Lecturer in English, UMaine
